Spike – A Love Story – Guidology’s OFFICIAL Review
Spike – A Love Story is a little arcade-type game that puts you in the power of a pesky spike trap! I thought that the game description really summed up the main idea of the game so here it is: “It’s not easy being a spike-trap. By design, players are supposed to get by you without TOO much trouble. But you just can’t do that. After years of seeing the same guy running by, over and over, day after day — you realize you’re in love. Unfortunately, the only means by which you can express this love is by showing him how good you are at crushing him into a tasty broth. Someday, you’re sure, he’ll get the hint.” Your goal is to splat the hero in story and survival mode! He’ll often use multiple evasive maneuvers to dodge you, so make sure to time your shots right or else he’ll take that opportunity to escape! Story mode is 25 levels long with multiple lives and survival mode is 50 levels long, but upon a death you’ll have to restart!
Spike – A Love Story is really a memory game! If you can remember what the hero will do every turn then you’ll have no problem catching him, unless you have bad timing/slow reflexes! Take note of what the hero will do every level and you should be able to pass each one with ease as you’ll have a basic idea of what he’ll do every time! If you hope to complete story mode you’re bound to die a couple of times! Most of the levels are extremely hard to complete if you aren’t doing them from memory. For me, I completed story mode after attempting it four or five times. You also have to remember that if you press the space-bar too early the hero will jump back and will wait until the spike is raised again. It will take a couple of seconds to reload. If you fire too early, there is a high chance that the hero will make it to the other side of the room unharmed! The best tip that I can give you is to be patient! The hero will never just go right on through – he’ll always stop at least once!
I thought that the idea was actually very original! I for one, have never played as a spike and to me, that gives Spike – A Love Story a bit of a higher rating in my mind. There are some games where you try to kill yourself, like Super Karioshi, but this game took that one step further, maybe not in the direction of difficulty, platformer, or puzzler, but in a fun, new direction and twist that made your goal to kill the player as the spike itself. I thought that the idea, or storyline was cute too, sure it kind of weird, but who cares anyway? I also liked the character himself, I liked how he tried multiple techniques to avoid the spike trap! At one point he goes all “Sold Snake” one us and hides in a cardboard box, concealing his movement! The hero actually had 25 different movement schemes, from doing jumps to using power-ups. The power-ups were pretty neat as well! Sure, I may have never killed the hero after he slipped on a banana peel, but the power-ups added something new and fresh to the game. My favorite power-up was the one where the hero duplicates himself.
I absolutely loved the art in Spike – A Love Story! The art actually had a nice retro look, mixed with a bit of more cartoon effects, such as the character and the proportion of his head to body. I really loved the textures and tiles that the artist (whomever that may be) used in the game. All of the sprites, including the character and the spike itself were wonderfully drawn and fit well with their environment. I really liked how when the spike hit the hero that the blood splattered around the room and onto the walls. This gave the game a bit more realism and created some to look at to show you accomplishments! The spike also was bloodied as the game went on (as shown in the image above). I also liked the animation. Both the spike and the character were beautifully animated. The character had a great flow of movement and the spike also moved well, bot to mention quickly and with a thud or splat! The gears, which were part of the spike were also nicely animated and I must congratulate the developer on paying attention to the small details!
I really liked the music. It provided a kind of spooky/haunted house, or in this case, dungeon or castle feel. I thought that it matched the game art wonderfully as the game was really based in such an environment. Best of all, the music didn’t get too repetitive and sounded great. This game also strongly focused on sound effects! There were a ton of sound effects! Most notably, were the running sound effects and the sound of the spike smashing onto whatever may lie below it.

There were also sound effects for when the hero and the spike talked and when the hero was alerted by you trying to kill him! There were also various other sound effects different stages when there were other items on the screen. Overall music and sound effects were great!
All in all, Spike – A Love Story was a really innovative game! Anyone that loves little arcade games will definitely love this game as it is easy to pick up and play, although, survival mode may take some time! In review, the game was pretty difficult the first time around. This is a game based around memory, if you know what the hero is going to do, before he does it, there is a good chance you’ll catch him. Ultimately, it boils down to reflexes! The gameplay was pretty neat and I loved all the different ways the hero attempts to evade you! The developer payed a lot of attention to detail, such as when the spike gained blood and the gears shifted. In my opinion, the art was fantastic, I loved the simple retro style and the drawings/sprites themselves. The music was also really good and reminded me of some spooky house! I noticed the the developer included a lot of sound effects and I really liked that! They sounded pretty authentic to the environment. In conclusion, Spike – A Love Story is an innovative arcade game – you’ll definitely want to play this game if you have a couple minutes to spare and don’t want to jump into a lengthy tutorial or complex gameplay!
